Robo-ones

The new robotic craze in Japan and Korea. The best english sites that I can find are RoboSavvy, Tribotix, Robo-One Korea, and Robogames. The best robots you can buy in the US seem to be the KHR-1 and the Robonova-1.

They are a lot of fun, and capable of some really amazing moves. Here in Japan, the KHR-1 platform is still the best, and the vast majority of the entries in the Robo-One competitions are based on that platform. While it's true that the basic design is a couple of years old, there have been improvements including heavy duty servos, a higher power version, gyros, and the like. It's unclear to me whether or not the overseas distributors are selling the original version or the latest configurations that we have here.

The Robonova is the new kid on the block, and hasn't really proven itself yet. At the Robo-One J 6 and Robo-One 9 contests last month there were very few Robonova based entries. Hopefully that will improve as people have more time to experiment with it. The Robonova is capable of a lot more than people realize. For example, Matt Bauer has his actually climbing ropes and rappelling - Tarzan Robonova.

You can find good English language coverage and reviews of the Robo-One class of robots on Robots Dreams, including videos we took at the March competition.
